Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
