Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
